Podium means a solid start in F3

18-04-17

My first season in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship has begun with a podium on home ground at Silverstone...

...which is a good solid way to start the season. I finished third in race two, but I didn't score points in the other two races, which is obviously disappointing for me and the Hitech Grand Prix team.

We went for a strategy of collecting more data in free practice and I felt like that put us a little on the back foot going into qualifying. First qualifying wasn't good, but then we went in the right direction for second qualifying and I put it on the third row for races two and three. But then you're straight into the races and at the mercy of tyre degradation running in the pack!

Race two was good though.

'From fifth on the grid I got a good start to move up to third, and even challenged Callum Llott for second at the beginning.'

Then I had to defend from Maxi Gunther – it was a struggle because the left-front tyre was going off. I was a bit worried that I even had a puncture. So it was a tough weekend, but the podium made it worthwhile – with the pace we had we probably even overperformed in that race, so to come away with 15 points is not too shocking at all.
