Pole and Podium finish at Norisring

03-07-17

It was great to build on my 2nd place last time out in Hungary with another 2nd at the Norisring, plus my first FIA F3 pole.

The high speed Norisring is unlike any other circuit that we race on so I was really looking forward to the challenge of something a bit different. Practice saw us a long way down the time sheets but we worked really hard on the set-up during the day and the result was pole by 2/1,000th's of a second!

'The first race I led away from pole and I was looking forward to my first FIA F3 win.'

The nature of the Norisring means that it's quite easy for cars to slipstream behind you and unfortunately I was hit by another car under braking for the hairpin with three minutes to go. The stewards gave the other driver a 20 second penalty but I was fired into the wall and out, which was obviously pretty gutting, to say the least, even though the other driver apologised afterwards.

I was determined to make amends in the final qualifying session and was very happy with 2nd and 4th, especially as the P2 was achieved without a tow. I was running 2nd for much of Race Two and came out of a pretty close scrap in 2nd, so I was happy with that. Race Three was another top five finish so I think we can say that we are closer and closer to the top step.

I'm happy with the fact that we have been among the top points scorers over the last two race weekends but, of course, you always want the maximum and I need to be the top points guy every weekend now. The next race is at one of my favourite circuits, Spa, and I have had plenty of success there in the past so I am raring to go. We will keep working hard to prepare and I'm confident that my Hitech team will be right on the pace again.
